Chinese Youngsters Head To 'Youth Retirement Villages' To Rejuvenate

Gen-Z are rejecting hustle culture. Maybe because they’ve seen Millennials lean into hustle culture without reaping the rewards? Instead of grinding today for an unpromised tomorrow, many young people are opting for a slower pace of life, with greater emphasis on self-care and wellbeing. It might be worth looking at China to see where the rest of the world might be heading.

Young people in China are heading to "youth retirement villages" to spend weekends or several weeks to recharge. This comes at a time when the Chinese job market is extremely competitive for students entering the workforce. Even those who are lucky to land a role will need to navigate long hours, exhausting commutes and endless orders from their higher-ups. No wonder young people in China are viewing “retirement villages” as utopia. I’m able to completely disconnect from work mode,” said Su Cong, who pays about $420 a month for room and board, cheaper than his monthly rent in Beijing. In China, “tang ping”, aka lying flat, has become a ubiquitous term for escaping the rat race. Could we start seeing a similar “slow economy” rise in the West?
