Generative AI is a relatively new technology and despite 67 million people using ChatGPT in the US alone, very little research has been conducted on how different generations use the platform. Perhaps we’re getting some early previews from the OpenAI CEO, Sam Altman.
According to Altman: “older people use ChatGPT as a Google replacement. Maybe people in their 20s and 30s use it as like a life advisor, and then, like people in college use it as an operating system”. A report earlier in the year showed that students are embracing ChatGPT more than any other kind of user. Beyond the traditional question-and-answer format, some young people are building a more long-term relationship with the technology. The use cases include relationship advice, a personalised therapist and a life coach. The early adoption of new technology typically begins with younger generations. But maybe social media can teach us a lesson on AI? These lessons can help us avoid making the same mistakes.
